This week, we bring you far north on our little island… to Coney Island, otherwise known as Pulau Serangoon!
Chapters

At-A-Glance

Did you know that nearly a decade ago, the Haw Par brothers used to own this island? It was called Haw Par Island and they even built a villa on the island. It was later sold to an Indian businessman Ghulam Mahmood in the 50s when he wanted to bring in the concept of New York’s Coney Island, but the dream was short lived when it was returned to the government in the 70s.
Today, this is 50 hectares of greenery (that’s more than 5,000 HDB apartments!) which we can bike/stroll into. The little Beans cycled from the West gate to the East gate and back again – all in a matter of three hours. It isn’t very big but there are so many “surprises” that make for a good detour, check them out below!

Main Highlights

🟩 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀: The iconic photo that looks exactly the same whether you take it at the East or West gate!
🚲𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀: There’s a main stretch of dirt trail (called the Main Path) and a parallel park connector on the south of Coney Island – but what is exciting are the various off-the-beaten paths that lead to the bird hides and little beaches!
🦜𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀: There are over 80 species of birds on Coney Island, and NParks have made it easy for us to catch a glimpse of these creatures from the bird hides (structures that hide us from the birds)
𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Near the West entrance, there is a “playground” that is made from wood from uprooted Casuarina trees – lots of “obstacles” for little Beans to jump about and play catching
🐳𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗲: An easily accessible promenade can be found near the West entrance. This paved area provides a cool spot to enjoy the views of passing ships and Johor’s shoreline without having to venture too far deep into Coney Island.
🌳𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸: Near Beach C, there is a board walk that elevates a walking/biking trail over mangrove. They are made from the trees cut down in the area!
🏖️ 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: There are several “beaches” along the north coast of Coney Island, they are actually more like natural openings into the sea – and the occasional container ship makes for a good view. However, the beaches aren’t very big for proper sun/sand/water play, and don’t stay too long as there are sand flies abound!
🏫 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹: Ongoing development to build up OBS in the east side of Coney Island. In fact, construction is blocking out access to the eastern part of Coney Island until end 2022!
🥘 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗴𝗼𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Lots of food options here (we hear the House of White Bee Hoon is great, albeit snaking queues)… and it’s also where you can rent bicycles or pedal go-karts
🌉 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝘂𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲: an iconic attraction nearby, due to its design and color. The bridge is the common passage that connects Punggol town to Pasir Ris town.
